Dan Jones
Athletic Director Advisory Council President
SB Seawolves Football ’87- ‘90
The lure of Stony Brook’s gridiron was just too strong for Dan Jones.
A Seawolves fullback from ’87 to ‘90, Dan remembers the thrill of being part of a team under Coach Kornhauser and besting number one ranked Fordham University at home. “It was the program’s first-ever marquee win,”said Dan.
“Dan was a very competitive football player who always contributed wherever he could,” remembers Coach Kornhauser. “It’s no surprise that he’s doing the same thing now in a different capacity.” Since this past August, Dan’s new athletic role is President of the Athletic Director’s Advisory Council whose mission is to provide student-athletes and coaches with the resources they need to compete at the highest possible level, athletically and academically.
“Dan Jones has a strong affinity for both our University and emerging Seawolves athletics program, making him the perfect fit to lead the Athletic Director’s Advisory Council,” said Athletic Director Jim Fiore.
Dan can attest to the defining experience of being a student athlete in general and at Stony Brook in particular. He talks about getting his “Best chance for success” at Stony Brook. “As an athlete and senior class president, I enjoyed a diverse range of activities that made me well rounded and gave me the ability to easily adapt to different situations,” said Dan.
A Long Island local and one of eight children, Dan now lives in Mt. Sinai with his wife Rachel and sons Ryan (5 yrs.) and Daniel Jr. (3 yrs.). He’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing for publicly-held
Double Take Software, an award-winning data protection and application software company with offices all over the world.
Despite the challenges of raising a family and Double Take Software’s customer base, Dan devotes many hours on the Advisory Council. He’s most proud of his success in recruiting an active subcommittee of “captains” who are drumming up support for athletics among community members, student-athlete parents, and corporate sponsors.
It’s not a hard sell, Dan points out. To say Stony Brook’s program of 425 Division I student athletes is up-and-coming is an understatement. Stony Brook offers big-time college sports excitement that’s accessible to all. And he urges more alums and friends to catch the Seawolves spirit.
“Just buy a ticket to a men’s or women’s basketball, football, lacrosse game or other sporting event,” said Dan. “It’s a great family-friendly event as well as an incredible exhibition of athletic competition - right in your own backyard!”
